California's Gender Recognition Act, effective January 1, 2019, streamlines the process for changing gender markers and establishes a nonbinary gender category on state identification documents. At UCSB, this means students can submit a lived name to appear in place of their legal name in selected university records and systems, a simple but meaningful step toward a more inclusive campus.
Faculty and staff can deepen their understanding through Gender Recognition & Lived Name: An Introduction to Gender Awareness, an e-course available in the UC Learning Center covering gender identity, nonbinary identities, and best practices for name, pronoun, and title usage.
To report issues of policy non-compliance, including name data not correctly displayed in IT systems or university documents, submit a ticket through the ServiceNow portal.
